This summer we stayed at the Saco/ Old Orchard KOA and I learned a valuable lesson. (If you wanna see our video on that campground check it out here: https://youtu.be/IHQlEsSxJ1Q) We were looking for things to do in the area that might be new or exciting. In our search we found a waterfall in Saco right near Old Orchard. We have been in that area so many times and we never knew there was a waterfall there. Saco is mostly flat and is mostly a city so we were surprised to see a waterfall exists. We decided to go and explore our new find. When we pulled into the parking lot I realized something incredible. We drove by the trail head maybe dozens of times and never knew it existed. The trail was flooded and a bridge was out when we went there so it wasn’t as easy and accessible but we were determined to see Cascade Falls. When we got there we were greeted with a pretty waterfall after a short trail in the woods. The waterfall was nice and the woods were nice but what was even better was the lesson I learned. When we were able to slow down and look we were able to see something we missed dozens of times before. We tend to get way too busy, and in doing so we end up missing all the little beautiful things around us. We might miss something creative or clever that our children do, or miss how pretty it is when the sun sets. Too often we get engrossed in our phones, or addicted to hurry and we miss simple things around us. Sarah really has helped me learn this lesson with her photography. She will always see the butterfly that everyone will pass by, or she will see the most colorful fall leave laying on the ground among all the other dead leaves. So when we slow down and we looked into an area just a little bit more we were able to see a wonderful waterfall that we passed up tons of times before. When we created Adventuring in the Moment we really wanted it to be a mantra to live by. Take each moment and find the adventure in it. If we slow down and seek the adventure around us we can find the most beautiful things. That is the way God intended it, he created a world for us to explore. A place where we can enjoy finding the unknown waterfalls. A lot of times we think we have to drive far away to find that kind of beauty but a lot of times it’s actually right in front of us. Adventure, beauty, and exploration can happen right in your home state. In our own yard we have a stream that is so peaceful to sit in front of and just hear the water bubble over the rocks. There is also a crab apple tree with the most amazing white blossoms in the spring. So even in our own yards you can find the beautiful things that God created. Exploration doesn’t have to be a large and expensive hobby, it can be a subtle mind change that opens up the world to you in a whole new way. So what is in your back yard? What can you find if you decide to slow down and look around? What is in your home state that you can adventure to? Let’s learn this lesson and Adventure in the Moment.
